1) Do you know the race of either character? Were your initial impressions change by the end of the story? Cite the evidence in the short story that supports your point of view.

2) When Morrison wrote “Recitatif,” she explicitly characterized it as an experiment about what happens when all racial codes are removed from “a narrative about two characters of different races for whom racial identity is crucial.” Do you think Morrison achieved this goal? What message do you think she conveyed to her readers by developing her characters with this strategy?
