As a homeschool teacher, part of my job is helping students with a diagnosed learning disability access the homeschool curriculum. In my current instructional setting, my older students currently have severe gaps in their reading skills. Current reading scores obtained from our progress monitoring program, LetsGoLearn, showed that 30% of my students tested at or below the 10th percentile, 22% tested between the 11th – 20th percentile, 29% tested between the 21st -55th percentile, and 19% tested at the 56th percentile or higher. From this data, it is apparent that my students have significant gaps in their reading skills. The current grade level of my students ranges from first to tenth grade. According to the LetsGoLearn Administrator Report, my struggling readers lack phonics, phonemic awareness, and vocabulary skills, directly limiting their reading comprehension. When remediating or providing intervention to my older students with reading gaps, they often receive one-on-one learning instruction in a multi-grade classroom. However, the instructional challenge related to student learning in my current practice is attempting to accommodate my older struggling readers individually. Despite my best efforts, older students with reading difficulties often feel singled out. They tend to reject reading interventions that reflect early learning material to fit in amongst their peers and sacrifice instruction that helps meet their learning needs.
